Course Description

The standardization of massive and critical machine type communications (MTC) by 3GPP has provided a robust and flexible framework for the cost-efficient, wide-scale deployment of a plethora of new use cases. Relevant technologies have been standardized for both LTE and 5G/NR, currently receiving a lot of focus by Mobile Network Operators, equipment vendors and IoT solution providers. In this context, the involved Engineering, R&D and technical management personnel not only need to assimilate the technical aspects of the available MTC solutions but are also required to consider new and diverse network architectures, design methodologies and performance metrics.

This course provides a thorough understanding of MTC over 3GPP radio access, with focus on LTE and 5G/NR. At first, an overview of the IoT framework is provided, including the relevant capabilities, use cases and standardization efforts. Next, the two main categories of MTC, namely, massive MTC (mMTC) and ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC), also referred to as critical MTC (cMTC), are thoroughly explained, focusing on the relevant technical requirements, the air interface implementation, and the involved procedures.

The special MTC cases of UAV and V2X communications, as well as the recently introduced 5G/NR RedCap, are also included in the course, with focus on the relevant use-cases and the air interface implementation.

Finally, core network requirements for the support of MTC are explained, covering both EPC and 5GC and discussing the benefits of virtualization, network slicing, mobile edge computing and local breakout.

Through engaging topic discussion, including presentations of relevant case studies, participants in this course will develop a profound and robust understanding of the subject matter in a very short period of time.

Who Should Attend

The course is intended for radio network engineers holding technical positions up to principal engineer or mid-level technical manager, as well as for academic staff involved in research and teaching in course-related areas.

The course should be interesting for mobile network operators, mobile network infrastructure vendors, companies involved in the design and implementation of IoT-based solutions and universities.

Level of Instruction

Intermediate level of instruction.

Prerequisites: Overview level knowledge of LTE and 5G/NR is required.  The ComSoc Training course 5G/NR Non-Standalone and Standalone Deployment being offered on 15-16 June 2022 is recommended in advance of this course because it provides an introduction of the 5G technology and a more detailed analysis of the 5G/NR Air Interface and of the Non-Standalone and Standalone deployment options. The 5G/NR Non-Standalone and Standalone Deployment course will help you to understand the implementation of two very important use case categories, namely massive IoT (mIoT) and Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communications (URLLC), over LTE and 5G/NR Radio Access.
