IEEE Education Week logo

IEEE ComSoc is proud to again join the rest of IEEE in celebration of the valuable educational programs offered across the organization. During this year’s IEEE Education Week, ComSoc is happy to share with you the latest education news, events and special offers and to highlight ComSoc education resources.

A Message from Rose Hu, Director, IEEE ComSoc Educational Services Board

Rose Qingyang Hu

As I begin my first year in the role of Director, ComSoc Educational Services Board, I am excited to take a more active role in leading activities in this area to serve ComSoc and the greater community.  ComSoc Education Programs offer a wealth of lifelong learning opportunities.  Our programs deliver educational resources for everyone, from school-age children to practicing professionals, and they address topics across the breadth of communication technologies.

One of our newest programs is in the area of Pre-University STEM Education.  This initiative provides resources for school-aged children, their teachers, and parents to help them understand the depth and range of topics within communications technologies and explore numerous career options available under the communications technology umbrella. ComSoc volunteers play a vital role in the success of this program by carrying out exciting and engaging activities for students and the adults in the students’ lives to learn more about communication engineering technologies.  There are a variety of resources available to support volunteers, such as instruction guides for hands-on activities with students.  You can view some of the amazing activities happening in our events feed and learn about new activities coming soon through the ComSoc funded local grants awarded in 2024.  ComSoc has been a leader within IEEE in working with the TryEngineering Program and is the first technical society to have its own landing page on the TryEngineering website!

Another exemplary program offered exclusively for ComSoc Student Members is the ComSoc School Series.  University students have unique opportunities to participate in these events, where they can hear engaging talks from leaders in the technical community, network with fellow students from around the world and in their local communities, and participate in unique hands-on activities to enrich their experiences.  University students can also help with planning these events, gaining valuable leadership and volunteer experience to set them apart from the crowd.  Hundreds of students have participated in this program over the years.  Here’s some feedback that they shared:

“I think the event was well organized and well executed. Also, I think that it was a great opportunity for us to get to interact with all those professors at the event.   It was a great opportunity for us to grow academically and socially.”

“Had a great time listening and learning things , it was quite well organized indeed.”

“The best part was that it was easy to network and make friends with everyone since it was a small group of people. The lectures were engaging and interesting and we were always given opportunities to ask questions, and I learned a lot from attending.”

“I really enjoyed the lectures and panel discussion, which showed the human side of the professors and professionals.”

And for those looking to stay updated on the latest communications engineering topics, the ComSoc Training Program offers valuable resources.  Courses developed and delivered by leaders in the technical community, these real-time, online learning experiences enable participants to learn from experienced professionals and ask questions and get answers in real-time. About 200 hours of training are delivered through this program each year.  CEU (continuing education units) are offered for all courses and some course series also offer the opportunity to earn a digital badge that you can share on LinkedIn.  Also new in 2024, ComSoc members now have free access to the Light-based Wireless Communications course (pre-recorded) created and presented by industry expert Harald Haas, known as the 'Father of LiFi. This course is offered through the ComSoc Media Center.

ComSoc is committed to expanding its educational offerings to meet the evolving needs of our members and the technical community. We hope that you will make the most of these programs and the many other educational opportunities that ComSoc offers.  Wish you a Happy IEEE Education Week 2024!
