Nirwan Ansari, Director, IEEE ComSoc Educational Services Board

Within ComSoc, education has been a high priority focus as noted in the IEEE ComSoc Vision: “To bring the world together in harmony through communications and networking technology research, application, education and incubation of new ideas.”

Education happens in many places in ComSoc: in-person experiences like local Chapter and Student Branch events; conferences; workshops; online webinars; and courses.  Educational offerings within ComSoc continue to grow, offering more opportunities for young students in Pre-University / STEM education, as well as for university students and practicing professionals.

ComSoc Education Programs Support Lifelong Journeys in Learning

ComSoc is especially excited about the progress that has been made in the creation of new resources and opportunities to inspire the next generation of engineers in the field of communications through its PreUniversity / STEM Education Program. Through collaborations with IEEE Educational Activities and increasing access to and awareness of resources to support activities in this area, ComSoc continues to pursue its goal to engage, inspire, and excite younger students to learn more about various communication technologies and explore engineering as a career.

ComSoc’s University Student Education Programs have also expanded over the last year offering more opportunities for students to develop additional skills and knowledge while pursing degrees in various fields of communication technologies.  This year alone,  the ComSoc School Series Program will offer four events in which students can gather in-person to meet with technology experts from industry and academia and hear talks on a range of topics related to communication technologies. These events will take place at various locations and dates.

Our Continuing Education Programs deliver resources to support the professional development of practicing engineers, keeping them up to date on the latest and emerging technologies in the field.  Over the last year we’ve added more new titles to the live online courses that are offered through the ComSoc Training Program. These new courses address important topics in the industry such as 6G, deep learning, quantum communications, industry 4.0 and more!  There’s also an expansive set of on-demand offerings including recordings from past webinars, webcasts, tutorials, and conference talks.

I’d like to personally invite you to check out the many great educational offerings on the ComSoc website and get involved.  And be sure to stay connected and up to date on the latest happenings in these education programs through the ComSoc Educational Activities Newsletter.  Happy 2023 IEEE Education Week!
