2021 Welcome Message

Yuanqiu Luo and Swades De

A message from Nirwan Ansari, ComSoc Educational Services Board Director

2021 is an exciting year for ComSoc Educational Activities.  First we are happy to welcome two new Educational Services Board (ESB) members this year, Yuanqiu Luo of Futurewei Technologies and Swades De of India Institute of Technology at Delhi.

The ComSoc ESB has been busy planning many activities this year including creating new partnerships, courses, and projects for the ComSoc community.  In the coming months, there will be two ComSoc School Series events, both completely online / virtual, making it easy for ComSoc Student Members to learn from world leading professors and industry leaders about the latest communication technologies.  ComSoc Training has released two new courses on 5G and has more new content coming soon.  There’s also an online education session for young professionals, iYES, taking place at IEEE ICC 2021 in June.  We hope that you can join us for these offerings and that you will stay tuned for more that is being planned for the second half of 2021!

i-YES (Young Engineers and Scientists) Initiative

The i-YES (Young Engineers and Scientists) Education & Training Program was created to inspire PhD students, researchers and young professionals through opportunities to interact with industry professionals and academics and learn about the benefits of and how to get involved in various volunteering, educational and standardization activities. i-YES events generally take place during the annual IEEE GLOBECOM and ICC conferences (every December and May/June, respectively).

i-YES was founded back in 2016 and since then, eight successful i-YES Tracks have been organized. Currently, i-YES is being managed by Prof. Periklis Chatzimisios (International Hellenic University, Greece) and Prof. Stefano Giordano (University of Pisa, Italy). The program of i-YES includes Keynote Speeches and Inspiring Talks from well-known academics and researchers, Panels, Hands-on sessions as well as time for Q&A.

The most recent i-YES event during IEEE Globecom 2020 conference included a Keynote Speech on “Future Network Architectures and Influences of the Pandemic – Technical, Funding, Regulations and Policies” by Prof. Vincent W.S. Chan (President, IEEE Communication Society). A session on “Technologies and Activities to Turn the Pandemic to a Great Opportunity” was offered which featured inspiring talks by Tomas O'Raghallaigh (Teledyne LeCroy) and Christopher Stapels (Mathworks).

Furthermore, a Panel on “Education and Teaching in Communication Engineering During Covid-19 Times” was also offered in which educational leaders shared their experience and discussed new ideas for online learning and supporting engineering education during the pandemic.  Participants in this Panel session included:

  • Manuel Castro (Past Director, IEEE Division VI)
  • Jennifer Fong (Director, Education Product, Sales, and Marketing, IEEE)
  • Stefano Giordano (Member, IEEE ComSoc Educational Service Board)

i-YES events will be planned for future IEEE GLOBECOM and IEEE ICC conferences so be sure to join us in these sessions. In IEEE ICC 2021 conference, i-YES will take place on June 18, featuring two Panels on “Softwarized 5G” and “Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Globalization in Communications Engineering” having excellent academics and researchers as Keynote Speakers and Panelists. If you have an interest in proposing an activity for inclusion in i-YES, please contact us.
