Nury Gabriela Ramirez

ESB Member Profile: Nury Gabriela Ramirez

Nury Gabriela Ramirez is not only a ComSoc Educational Services Board Member, she is also the ComSoc Latin America Director, IEEE Senior Member, and has been a leader on women’s technical outreach and professional awareness projects.  Nury currently works at HCL as a software project manager.   She has been an IEEE ComSoc member and volunteer since she was a student, and truly believes that if a student sees value in their experiences with our society, they will stay loyal.

When asked why she got involved with ComSoc Educational Activities, Nury advised that she wanted to “be an active player in the strategy and activities that promote the different pieces of training” in this field.  She added that “these courses, webinars, and programs are very specialized and cover the latest technologies and trends in communications that potentialize the value we offer as an IEEE society.“  Nury has been highly involved in engaging students and young professionals in ComSoc activities, including her early work at the Section level.  In 2019 Nury was recognized for her valuable work by being awarded ComSoc’s Latin America Region Young Professional Award.

A recent and exciting new project that Nury is helping to lead for ComSoc is in the area of PreUniversity / STEM education.  She noted that “Lately, I have been part of a recent initiative to have ComSoc as part of the Try Engineering portal from the IEEE Educational Activities Board. We are launching a webinar on 5G this month that will introduce this interesting topic to students and primary school educators and volunteers to use as part of their outreach activities. With this, we want to raise awareness and interest among kids on these telecommunications topics that they usually take for granted nowadays.”   One of the goals Nury’s work in the area on behalf of ComSoc is to inspire the next generation of communication engineers and excite young students to learn more about communication technologies.

Finally, what Nury has enjoyed most about serving on the ComSoc Educational Services Board is working with her “colleagues that are part of this committee, who are respected and talented academic colleagues with more years of experience in the ComSoc society and in their respective fields.”  She added that she “always feels motivated by their commitment and knowledge.”
