Pre-University STEM Education Event Contest

ComSoc and our partners want to hear from you about your Pre-University / STEM events.  We are looking for inspiring and re-usable events created by ComSoc Members that help to ignite excitement in younger students to explore careers in communication technologies.  With this goal in mind, we are happy to announce the 2023 Pre-University STEM Education Event Contest that is accepting entries now through 6 October 2023.  Cash prizes for the best entries are available.

The contest is open to all IEEE ComSoc Members and entries are welcome from individuals or teams.  Contest submissions must include documentation for events within ComSoc’s technical scope (communications engineering and technology) and need to be delivered in 2023 (past or future events in 2023 only). Learn more about this contest and view the official rules on the ComSoc Pre-University STEM website.

Each event features a highly interactive classroom environment with an intense focus on learning the cutting-edge trends in communications technology.

Statistics for the first three ComSoc School Series events this year:

  • 527 student participants
  • From 11 different countries
  • 12 days of programming

The fourth and final ComSoc School Series Event for 2023 is planned for 21-23 September in Atlanta, GA USA.  An exciting program will bring together scholars, local professionals, Distinguished Lectures (DLs), and students to learn, connect, and get inspired about the latest innovations in the area of Next Generation Cloud Communications.

Call for Proposals for 2024 ComSoc School Series Events

Would your Section or Chapter like to organize a ComSoc School Series event in 2024?  Submit a proposal by the extended deadline of 30 September 2023.

The typical duration of an IEEE ComSoc School Series event is 3 to 5 days and can be either in-person or virtual (online only).  For 2024, ComSoc is planning to support two in-person events and two virtual events through this program.  ComSoc will provide funding to the extent available to support the event (approximately US$30,000 per in-person event and US$5000 per virtual event).

We invite you to submit a proposal for a 2024 event now. Please use the proposal guide to create your proposal and include as much information as possible.  Submit your proposal here no later than 30 September and bring this unique opportunity to the students in your local area!

Coming Soon!  ComSoc Challenge Cup and ComSoc 4MT Contest

ComSoc is excited to announce that it will soon be accepting entries for two, student-focused competitions, the ComSoc Challenge Cup and the 4MT Competition (4 minute thesis).  Here’s a preview of these new opportunities that have been developed specifically for ComSoc Student Members.

The ComSoc Challenge Cup is a competition that has been created to encourage teams of students to work together to solve real-life and challenging problems such as AI for communication and networks, etc.  Cash prizes will be given to the teams who are selected for first, second or third place awards! The competition is set to launch later this month (late September).

The ComSoc 4MT Competition challenges PhD students to explain their research project to a non-specialist audience in just four minutes.  Participation in 4MT supports competitors to: Communicate their ideas effectively; Describe their research findings to a non-specialist audience; Increase their profile among the research community; and Network with other PhD students.  Round one will be online and will take place from late September through mid-October.  Winners from round one will be invited to the final portion of the competition taking place at GLOBECOM 2023 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Check the University Students section of the ComSoc website for more information that will be posted soon.
