Optical communications, encompassing both fiber optics and free-space optics, are essential in next-generation telecommunication systems. These technologies leverage light as a medium for data transmission, providing unrivaled bandwidth and minimal latency and are key to support the never-ending demand for data-heavy applications and services.

The importance of communication theory and information theory in optical communications has been increasing over the years as transmission rates continue to grow and reliability is more important than ever. The goal of this special issue is to address multiple theoretical aspects of next-generation optical communication systems, with a special emphasis on information, communication, and coding theory.

This Special Issue seeks high-quality submissions on information and communication theory with applications to (i) optical networks, (ii) fiber optical communications, and (iii) free-space optics, including, but not limited to:

  • Fundamental limits of optical communications
  • Access, metro and core optical network architectures
  • DSP algorithms for quantum communications
  • Optical network management and automation
  • Channel modelling for FSO and fiber optics
  • Laser communications for terrestrial/space networks
  • Fiber nonlinear impairments and compensation
  • Energy efficiency, resilience and security of optical networks
  • Communication aspects of novel fibers
  • Photonic switching systems and networks
  • Coherent and direct detection techniques
  • Optical network resource allocation schemes and algorithms
  • Radio over fiber
  • Optical routing and multiplexing solutions
  • High-speed forward error correction
  • Joint optical communication and sensing
