The Metaverse which is a reality-virtuality continuum, amalgamates physical and digital worlds with the objective to create theoretically unlimited virtual environments for end-users to engage in versatile activities via digital avatars. This immersive experience has revolutionized numerous industries by facilitating real-time interactions among globally dispersed users, consequently enabling the development of remote virtual environments.

To create a seamless virtual environment, Metaverse relies on the convergence of various emerging technologies, such as image processing and computer vision, on the one hand. Whereas on the other hand, efficient wireless communication strategies, ubiquitous network access, and edge/cloud/fog computing techniques enable a real-time immersive Metaverse experience through advanced and impeccable wireless transmissions and dedicated network paths for efficient communication between geographically distributed users. This highlights the importance of efficient wireless systems and pervasive network access for the true realization of the Metaverse. However, traditional wireless systems and networking solutions have limited capabilities in delivering seamless multimedia communication due to inefficient protocol design, resulting in considerable latency. This Special Issue on "Challenges and Opportunities in Metaverse-based Communication and Networking" aims to showcase recent advancements in wireless communication and networking, including but not limited to the emergence of B5G/6G, space-air-ground integrated wireless systems, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, New-IP/Future Vertical Communication Networks (FVCN) alongside Information-Centric Networking (ICN) and software-defined networking, AI for wireless communication and networking as well as edge and fog computing integration to facilitate contemporary as well futuristic Metaverse applications. The advancements in the aforementioned technologies have the potential to enable pervasive and seamless wireless communication and network access that can potentially resolve challenges within the Metaverse.
