The IEEE Open Journal of Communications Society (OJ-COMS) invites manuscript submissions in the area of Enabling Technologies for Smart Communication and Networking in 6G Era.

Telecommunication systems and networks are infiltrating our lives from all directions. Ranging from smartphones to smart appliances and everything that builds up a smart environment is completely based on the trends of the communication networks. As a matter of fact, information and communication networks are crucial for the success of any smart technology, as they greatly influence the quality and performance of the urban services (energy, transportation, utilities, etc.) Undoubtedly, digitalization demands communication. As the progress towards the 6G network is significantly scaling up every day, both consumers and businesses are getting attracted to smart communication and networking. Here, the major requirement is to fulfil timely, reliable and personalized communication. While the evolution of 6G networks acts as a catalyst to accelerate the implementation of smart communication networks for better user experiences and enhanced services, the research in this stream still has a long way to go.

Today smart cities are pioneering new approaches to govern and implement smart services based on real-time data. With 6G networks, there will be a massive pressure on the smart devices and sensors to learn quickly and track behaviour, such that they can effectively predict and optimize the trends and patterns to control the various smart applications. Smart communication allows these applications to easily collect, process and deliver targeted insights across any application, enabling them to enhance the effectiveness of the people and data. With smart communication at an inflexion point, taking proactive steps to find the enabling technologies for smart communication and its implementation are essential for optimized user experience. Technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, software-defined networks, and distributed machine learning will significantly help connect and control billions of IoT devices ranging from macro to micro to nano-level in the digital future of the 6G era. Further, it will truly support the next-generation communication standard. Hence, leveraging advanced technologies for smart communication that optimize the use of network resources, reduce network traffic, latency, and safety has become crucial.

This special issue offers a platform for the scientific and the research community to collaborate and explore the enabling technologies to promote the functionalities of the smart communication networks in the context of the 6G era. Research works focusing on enabling technologies that support the basic machine to machine communication to advanced levels of network analytics, virtualization and security features are most welcomed.

The topics of interest for the special issue include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Intelligent sensing, communication and computing paradigms for smart communication
