Call for Papers

Smart cities have become emerging innovation of academy, industry, and government. A city may be called ‘smart’ when investments in human and social capital and traditional and modern communication infrastructure fuel sustainable economic growth and a high quality of life, with a wise management of natural resources through participatory governance. In particular, internet of things (IoT) play an important role to connect everything together and to the Internet through specific protocols for information exchange and communications, achieving intelligent recognition, location, tracking, monitoring and management.

By interconnecting physical and virtual worlds with huge amounts of electronic devices distributed in houses, vehicles, streets, buildings and many other public environments, IoT-based smart cities can provide various kinds of services for both the citizens and the administrators. For example, smart homes, smart parking lots, weather systems, vehicular traffic, environmental pollution, surveillance systems, smart energy and smart grids. With the explosive growth of smart city, IoT-based services receive increasing attention. It creates many scientific and engineering challenges that call for ingenious research efforts from both academia and industry, especially for the development of efficient, scalable, and reliable communication and network technologies.

This Special Issue (SI) aims to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss various aspects of Internet of Things for Smart Cities, explore key technologies and develop new applications in this research field. We solicit papers covering various topics of interest that include, but not limited to the following:

  • IoT-based architecture and infrastructure for smart cities
  • IoT-based services for smart and green cities
  • IoT-based education/health/service technologies
  • IoT-based cloud computing for smart cities
  • IoT-based big data process and application for smart cities
  • IoT-based mobile Internet
  • IoT-based system design, modeling and evaluation
  • IoT-based network and communication protocol for smart cities
  • IoT-based reliability, security, privacy and trust for smart cities
  • IoT-based applications, business and social issues
