Zabih Ghassemlooy

Prof Zabih Ghassemlooy (Senior Member of IEEE, Fellow of Optica and IET) received the B.Sc. degree (Hons.) from Manchester Metropolitan University, Manchester, UK, in 1981, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Manchester in 1984 and 1987, respectively with Scholarships from the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council, UK. 1986-1987 research fellow at the University of Manchester, and in 1988 he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the London City University, UK. In late 1988 he joined Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield, UK as a lecturer becoming a professor in 1997. In 2004, he joined the Faculty of Engineering and Environment, Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK, as an Associate Dean Research until 2014, where he is currently the Head of the Photonics Technology Laboratory and Optical Communication Research Group. He was a Research Fellow (2016-22) and a Distinguished Professor (2015-2022) with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Quanzhou, China. He was a Visiting Professor with the Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, Parit Raja, Malaysia (2013-17), Huaqiao University, Quanzhou (2017-18), the Technical University of Prague, Prague, Czech Republic (2019), the Technical University of Graz, Graz, Austria (2018), and many others. His research interests include optical wireless communications (OWC), free-space optics, visible light communications, hybrid RF-OWC, and software-defined networks with funding from EU, U.K., Research Council, and industries. He has supervised more than 12 post-doctoral research fellows and 75 PhD students, published over 990 papers and 8 books, as well as over 120 keynote and invited talks. Vice-chair of EU COST Action Optical Wireless Communications - An Emerging Technology (OPTIWISE-IC1101) 2011-15, and European Network on Future Generation Optical Wireless Communication Technologies (NEWFOCUS-CA19111) 2020-24. He is the Chief Editor of British Journal of Applied Science and Technology and International Journal of Optics and Applications, an Associate Editor of a few journals, such as IEEE and IET, and the Co-Guest Editor of many special issues on OWC. He has been the Vice-Chair of OSA Technical Group of Optics in Digital Systems since 2018 and the Chair of IEEE Student-Branch at Northumbria University since 2019. From 2004 to 2006, he was the IEEE UK/IR Communications Chapter Secretary, the Vice-Chair from 2006 to 2008, the Chair from 2008 to 2011, and the Chair of IET Northumbria Network from 2011 to 2015. He is the Founder and the Chair of the IEEE/IET International Symposium on Communications Systems, Networks and Digital Signal Processing (CSNDSP), West Asian Symposium on Optical and mmW Wireless Communications (WASOWC), South American conference on Visible Light Communications (SACVLC), and the Co-Founder of several international events, including Workshop on Optical Wireless Communications in IEEE ICC since 2015, Colloquium on OWC in CSNDSP since 2004, and International Workshop on OWC since 2015. He is a member of International Technical Committee of a very large number of international conferences. He has been the Vice-Chair of OSA Technical Group of Optics in Digital Systems since 2018.
